The Perth Mint’s Lunar Series I coin program was introduced in 1996 with the Year of the Mouse coin. The program continued for 12 years, with each animal from the Zodiac represented by the time the coin series concluded in 2007. The coins in this product listing were the 11th coins in the series.
In the Zodiac, the dog is listed 11th because that is the position it finished the Great Race in. The Great Race is a cultural tale that speaks of the animals responding to the Jade Emperor’s call for a meeting. As the animals of the world raced to meet him, only 12 would arrive. The order in which they arrived determined their position in the Zodiac.
On the reverse side of each coin is the image of a dog, standing on all fours in an alert position with grass visible below its body. The year of minting is engraved to its left; the weight, metal content, and purity below; and the Chinese symbol for dog is featured on the right. The obverse side bears Ian Rank-Broadley’s right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, as used on all Australian coins.
The Perth Mint was originally founded as the final mint in the Royal Mint system. After the Sydney Mint and Melbourne Mint closed, the Perth Mint remained as the nation’s oldest operating facility. Today, it is owned and operated by the government of Western Australia, and is not the national mint of Australia.
