Description

1986 1 oz Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coin

The 1980s was one of the most popular eras for the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coins. Having recently been introduced in 1979, the series enjoyed strong demand throughout the 1980s as the pent-up demand for gold worldwide was yet to be completely satisfied. The 1986 release of the Gold Maple Leaf was among the many early issues of note. Right now, 1986 1 oz Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coins are available to purchase online.

Coin Highlights:

  • Arrives in a protective plastic flip!
  • 8th year of availability in the 1 oz Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Series!
  • Limited mintage of 1,093,500 coins!
  • Contains 1 Troy oz of .9999 pure gold.
  • Bears a face value of $50 (CAD) backed by the federal government.
  • On the obverse is Queen Elizabeth II.
  • The reverse features the sugar maple leaf.

Each 1986 1 oz Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coin available in this product listing comes to you inside a protective plastic flip. These coins had a mintage in excess of one million coins for the year. This was notable because 1986 marked the fifth year in the first eight releases of the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf in which the mintage of the coins exceeded one million specimens.

However, the 1986 Canadian Gold Maple Leaf’s mintage was notable for another reason. The 1986 coin was the last one to exceed one million coins in a single year until the 2009 release of the coins. Most of the 1990s and much of the 2000s saw demand for Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coins remain much lower as interest in gold was suppressed by good economic conditions, with the exception of the Y2K crisis in the late 1990s.

On the obverse side of 1986 1 oz Gold Maple Leaf Coins is a right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Depicted with the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara on her head, this second-generation effigy was created in 1964 by Arnold Machin and would feature on the coins of Britain, Canada, and other Commonwealth nations between 1965 and 1989. This was the first effigy of the Queen to grace the coins of the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf.

The reverse field of the 1986 Canadian Gold Maple Leaf depicts the sugar maple leaf. This distinctive image of the national emblem was created for this coin series in 1979 by Walter Ott and used on all versions of the coin.
