The designs on the American Gold Buffalo Coin have been plucked from the history books at the United States Mint. Designed in 1913 by James Earle Fraser, the images were first used on the Buffalo Nickel from 1913 to 1938. When the design was created, it was one of the first majory denominations of US currency to feature images of a native indigenous figure.

Obverse visuals on the 2022-W Proof American Gold Buffalo include an effigy of a native tribal figure. This indigenous figure is shown in right-profile relief and comes with a stoic look on his face. His braided hair has feathers woven in at the back. James Earle Fraser created this portrait by combining the physical traits of at least three indigenous tribal figures from the early 20^th century in the United States.

Reverse designs on 2022-W 1 oz Proof Gold Buffalo Coins feature an American bison. For this design, Fraser used Black Diamond as inspiration for the bison. Black Diamond was a resident bison at the Central Park Zoo in New York City during the early 20^th century.
