The Great Britain Gold Sovereign is one of the most famous gold coins in the world today. Modern British Gold Sovereigns are struck with the same design concepts introduced by the Royal Mint in 1817 with the reintroduction of the Sovereign to English currency. Rooted in the Tudor Dynasty, English Sovereigns were halted in the 17th century and not reintroduced until the reign of King George III. Today, modern Sovereigns carry on that tradition. Benedetto Pistrucci’s renowned St. George and the Dragon design, first introduced on the British Gold Sovereign in 1817, remains one of the most recognized and enduring images in numismatics. The Italian-born engraver and medallist crafted a strikingly detailed composition that captures the intense moment of St. George, astride his horse, delivering a decisive blow to the dragon with both power and elegance.
On the obverse of 2025 Gold Sovereigns is a bust of His Majesty King Charles III. Martin Jennings created this effigy of Charles III in late 2022 following the passing of Queen Elizabeth II. This left-profile relief depicts His Majesty without a crown.
The reverse side of the 2025 Great Britain Gold Sovereign comes with the famous depiction of St. George astride a horse as he slays a dragon. Influenced by Greco-Roman artistic traditions, Pistrucci portrayed St. George riding without stirrups, reminiscent of ancient Greek cavalry, while the sweeping cape and defined musculature of both horse and rider reflect his mastery of classical form.
