The Chinese Mint issued two varieties of 1 oz Gold Pandas in 1989, with Large Date issues struck by its mint in Shenyang, while Small Date issues were struck by its mint in Shanghai. The Shenyang Large Date coins are considered the scarcer of the two.

1989 Gold Panda Coins with the Large Date moniker are named as such due to the numerals used on the reverse side of the coin. The date mark of 1989 appears in slightly larger, thicker numerals than those issued by Shanghai in the Small Date issue. Comparatively, the Shanghai-issued Small Dates have smaller, thinner numerals.
